Now is the time to be thinking about your college and career plans in the future. Here are a Couple of Next Steps for your Spring Semester.
College Readiness
Sign up for the Spring SAT by clicking this link here and selecting your test date. Email Tiana.Ottley@k12.dc.gov for a fee waiver code.
Learn why the SAT is important by watching this video.
Practice for the SAT at www.SATpractice.org
Get high grades. Your GPA Grade Point Average is one of the most important factors for getting accepted into a good college.
Sign up for the Scholarship Newsletter. (There will be some scholarships for juniors that you can apply to now.)
Sign up for College Board’s Opportunity Scholarships and complete each of the steps to qualify for more scholarships from $500 - $40,000.
Research colleges on BigFuture.CollegeBoard.org that you are interested in that may have the majors you are interested in.
Get a head start on your College and Scholarship Essays by doing the College Essay Guy’s Step-by-Step Guide on How to Write a Super Essay.
Review the College Readiness Timeline on HD’s College and Career Counseling Website.
Career Readiness
Take a Career Assessment on Career Coach DC to get an idea of different careers that match your personality.
Search for virtual internship opportunities by emailing DC organizations who have hosted DC interns in the past or create your own internship.
Volunteer and do Community Service – Make sure you track all of your volunteer and community service experience because this will be used on your Resume. Click link for Volunteer opportunities in the DC Area.
Learn about how to Create a Resume and Create a Resume on Career Coach DC.
Set up a Mock Interview. First Watch the Video titled: How to Ace Your Next Interview – and Mock Interview Prep, and then answer the most common interview questions.
Use Backwards Planning to Write out the next 10 steps/Goals you think you need to take over the next 10 years to get into the career of your dreams. Career Coach DC will allow you to Browse Careers and it will tell you what educational degrees you may need and what skills you need to be considered for certain career opportunities.
