Interest

Candidate is genuinely interested in the role to which they are applying and in the field of construction.

Background Check

Candidate knows that depending on the type of site they may be required to do a background screening. Certain types of previous legal incidents pay not be allowed depending on the site. 


During an interview the employer cannot ask about your background however certain job sites will have legal background requirements. To prevent being let go further down the line, ask the employer about their job sites and the background requirements. 

Drug Screening 

Candidates know that they will be drug screened including for marijuana upon hire and periodically. A positive test usually will result in termination due to the construction industry’s need for safety on a job site. 

During an interview the employer cannot ask about your drug history. You will be subject to a drug screen upon hire and during an interview you can ask about the process, timing, and company policies.

Motivated to Get the Job Done

You gain personal and professional satisfaction from seeing a project completed. 


The employer would like to know how you see yourself in the larger construction project. Whether you are responsible for a single task or must keep an entire team together to complete a construction job does seeing a good completed job matter to you?

Self Starter/Problem Solving Approach 

You can work independently to complete a task and can address and solve challenges that may come up on a job site. 

Construction sites have many moving parts. Can you convey how you can be trusted to work independently? When a problem comes up can you demonstrate a problem solving attitude to keep the project going on time and on budget? 

Dependable and Reliable 

You understand the work day of construction sites and can be relied upon to be on time and show up everyday. Can you be reached easily and communicate with your foreman/manager about changes in your schedule? 


This is an opportunity for you to share about how punctual and reliable you are as an employee. Do you typically arrive early for your shift? If you have arrived late to work before, how have you communicated your tardiness? This is a crucial part of construction, convey that you can show up/ 

Like Working with Your Hands 

Candidate likes to work with their hands and outside. This is more relevant for Skilled Trades. 


Working outside and with your hands are the most central part of working in construction. Explain your previous work experience that aligns. 

Focus on Safety 

Candidate understands the important of safety. 



The employer wants to know that you will focus on safety at all times. If you have taken and safety certifications or classes make sure you share that. Discuss times at other jobs that you have ensured safety. 

Willingness to Learn 

Candidate is willing to learn, be trained, and open to feedback. Candidate sees themselves growing in their mastery of the skilled trade. 

Construction skills take time to master and learn. Can you pay attention, learn on the job, and show your mastery of a skill? Show an example of how you have been teachable or improved your skills while working. Construction places have a hierarchy, early on you will be in listening and learning mode with your foreman. 

Talk about certifications you have earned.
