QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must be at least 17 years of age (if under 18, must have parental consent)
Possess a high school diploma; GED accepted in some cases. (Seniors you can start the application process in your senior year and you will finish everything once you get your HS Diploma.)
U.S. citizen; green card holder; permanent resident (proof of legal residency)
Must achieve an AFQT score on the ASVAB of a minimum of a 31; ASVAB scores determine eligibility for different roles in the military branches
Good physical condition and ability to pass the physical fitness evaluation
Must be able to pass a drug/substance abuse test
Must pass background check: no prior felony convictions, juvenile offenses, drug and domestic violence charges
May need to pass a credit check and a security clearance check, depending on the branch and role
APPLICATION PROCESS
Below is a general overview of the enrollment process to enlist in the military; slight variations exist for each military branch:
Attend an information session with a recruiter at your school to learn about career options within the military or ask your College and Career Coordinator to provide resources on the process.
Take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) exam at the school site. Take the ASVAB exam at the school site first, as it is easier to re-test when exam is taken at the school site. Achieve at least an AFQT score of a 31.
Complete application and submit required documents to recruiter, including ASVAB scores.
Proof of citizenship (social security card)
Driver’s license or valid state identification card
High school transcript and/or diploma
Other (varies based on branch)
Pass the Physical Fitness Evaluation at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS)
